I first got to know Susan Fong online last year through the Malaysia Chapter of ICF (MICF) and then met her in person at #ICS2026.
However, we did not have much time to talk that day, so we decided to meet for coffee.
Susan studied and worked outside of Malaysia for a long time. She studied in India as an exchange student and led a range of events and social initiatives through her NGO work in China and Cambodia.
Today, she continues to make an impact in a different way as a life and transition coach.
During our conversation, we realised that we have both been navigating a similar period of transition in our 50s.
Through our coaching journeys, we have been trying new things, learning along the way and creating work that feels meaningful to us.
For many people in their 50s, the plan is to stay in their current profession until retirement. Others may hope to stop working if their situations allow. There is no right or wrong choice.
But Susan and I want to use our knowledge and skills to contribute and create meaningful impact as long as we have the mental and physical capacity.
As the world changes so quickly, we also want to stay curious to keep learning, growing and engaging with what is happening around us.
Alongside looking after my physical and mental health, I realised that what motivates me is keeping my brain as active and youthful as I can through learning and growth.
Today’s conversation made me reflect again on what keeps me moving forward.
I realised that, alongside looking after my physical and mental health, continuing to learn and keeping my brain active as I age are important to me. They give me a strong sense of motivation.
Perhaps developing greater self-awareness and discovering new sides of myself are also part of growth.
